The Federal Government has addressed recent comments made by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II concerning the economic reforms initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking at a public event in Lagos, the former Central Bank Governor acknowledged the importance of the reforms but stated his decision to withhold support for the government.
In response, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, expressed disappointment in a statement, noting that while Emir Sanusi is entitled to critique government policies, his remarks appear influenced by personal grievances.
“It is disheartening that reforms universally acknowledged as necessary—even by Emir Sanusi II himself—are being subtly criticized due to a perceived shift in loyalty. His Highness, given his expertise in economics, has a duty to contribute constructively rather than allow personal discontent to cloud his perspective,” the statement read.
The Federal Government highlighted the significance of key reforms such as the unification of exchange rates and the removal of fuel subsidies, emphasizing their role in Nigeria’s economic recovery.
Idris noted that while these measures are challenging in the short term, they have already produced positive outcomes, including increased investor confidence, reduced debt service ratios, and improved fiscal sustainability.
“Rebuilding Nigeria requires collective focus, unity, and sacrifice from all stakeholders. It is imperative for respected leaders to avoid rhetoric that undermines public trust and instead support the shared goal of national prosperity,” the minister added.
The statement also encouraged Emir Sanusi to prioritize national interest over personal considerations and actively contribute to the government’s efforts to reposition the economy.
“This is a pivotal moment for our country. Collaboration is essential, and distractions must be avoided,” Idris stated.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity, expressing openness to constructive dialogue with all stakeholders working toward Nigeria’s progress.
