Nine dead in fresh cholera outbreak in Rivers

The Rivers State Government has confirmed the deaths of nine individuals due to a recent cholera outbreak in the state.

The cases were reported in two local government areas: Andoni and Akuku-Toru.

Dr. Adaeze Oreh, the State Commissioner for Health, confirmed the outbreak during a media briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

She reported that three deaths occurred in Andoni LGA, while Akuku-Toru recorded six fatalities.

The health commissioner explained that these deaths were part of 41 suspected cholera cases reported in the two areas.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the victims of what appears to be an outbreak of acute watery diarrhea, which is suspected to be cholera. However, the Ministry of Health has not yet confirmed that the deaths were directly caused by cholera in Isiodun community, Andoni LGA,” Oreh said.

She further clarified that the symptoms exhibited in the cases align with cholera, which is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

The disease is typically spread through contaminated water, food, or contact with surfaces exposed to infected individuals.

Dr. Oreh raised concerns about the recurring nature of cholera and acute watery diarrhea outbreaks in Rivers State, particularly during dry seasons.

Theoutbreaks present significant public health challenges due to their high mortality rate and rapid spread.

“As of January 13, 2025, we have recorded 41 suspected cases in Andoni and Akuku-Toru LGAs, and nine deaths. Three of the deaths were reported from Andoni, and six from Akuku-Toru,” Oreh added.

The outbreak was first brought to the attention of the Rivers State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre on January 11, 2025, following the deaths of three individuals within 48 hours in Isiodun, Andoni LGA. In response, a rapid response team from the Ministry of Health, led by the Director of Public Health and Disease Control, was deployed to investigate and manage the situation.

Dr. Oreh assured the public that emergency response measures have been activated in collaboration with the Andoni LGA authorities and various partners. These measures include enhanced surveillance to contain the outbreak.

She also emphasized the importance of hygiene practices to prevent further spread, urging residents to frequently wash their hands with soap and clean water, especially before eating and after using the toilet.

She advised that drinking water be boiled or treated with chlorine, and food should be thoroughly cooked and consumed while hot. Additionally, the public was cautioned against consuming water from unverified sources and unsafe food.
