NiMet forecasts haze, sunshine across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert predicting sunshine and hazy conditions across the country from Thursday to Saturday.

In its weather outlook released on Wednesday in Abuja, NiMet forecasted clear skies with hazy conditions in the northern regions throughout the period.

The agency also predicted moderate dust haze in the North Central region, with horizontal visibility ranging from two to five kilometres.

The southern regions are expected to experience hazy conditions with occasional cloud cover, along with early morning fog and mist along the coast.

On Friday, NiMet expects continued sunny skies with hazy conditions in the north, while the North-Central will experience slight dust haze and good visibility. The southern areas will maintain hazy conditions, with fog and mist in coastal regions during the early morning.

By Saturday, the northern and North-Central regions will see sunny skies in a hazy atmosphere.

The southern part of the country is forecasted to experience haziness with scattered clouds, along with possible early morning thunderstorms in parts of Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Delta states. Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected in Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Bayelsa states.

NiMet has advised the public to take necessary precautions due to suspended dust particles in the air, particularly for those with respiratory conditions such as asthma.

The agency also warned of strong winds ahead of thunderstorms in certain areas and urged the public to follow safety guidelines issued by relevant authorities.

“Airline operators are advised to consult specific weather reports from NiMet for their operations. The public is encouraged to stay updated through NiMet’s weather updates on their website at www.nimet.gov.ng.”
