A violent incident disrupted the proceedings of the Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, chaired by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, on Wednesday.
Gunshots erupted near the Edo High Court Complex on Sapele Road, Benin City, sending attendees—including lawyers, politicians, litigants, and journalists—scrambling for safety.
The sudden violence caused widespread panic, with many fearing stray bullets.
However, armed security personnel quickly intervened to restore order, allowing the tribunal to resume its session without further disruptions.
APC chairman condemns incident
Edo State APC Chairman Jarret Tenebe strongly criticized the attack, calling it an unacceptable affront to justice.
He described the tribunal as a sacred institution that should remain untouched by violence.
In his statement, Tenebe said, “The tribunal is a place where justice is expected to be administered impartially.
“Violence undermines the legal system and endangers everyone involved. Regardless of political affiliations, resorting to such acts is indefensible and must be condemned in the strongest terms.”
Tenebe urged authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible, emphasizing that violence has no place in a civilized society. “Swift action must be taken to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice,” he added.
The tribunal is currently addressing petitions filed after the September 21, 2024, Edo governorship election, which declared APC candidate Senator Monday Okpebholo as the winner. He was inaugurated on November 12, 2024.
Seven political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), and others, have challenged the election results, asserting that their candidates should be declared the rightful winners of the closely contested poll.
