Gov. Sanwo-Olu denies involvement in Obasa’s impeachment

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has dismissed rumors suggesting his involvement in the impeachment of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu refuted claims that he played any role in the impeachment, emphasizing that it was a decision solely made by the legislators.

“There is no truth to the rumor that the governor influenced the impeachment. It was entirely a matter for the lawmakers,” Akosile said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.

He further stated, “Governor Sanwo-Olu’s focus remains on the welfare of Lagosians. The events in the Assembly were within the jurisdiction of the legislators, and like everyone else, the governor followed the proceedings through the media.”

Obasa, who had represented the Agege 1 Constituency and served as Speaker since 2015, was removed during a special plenary session on Monday.

Thirty-two out of the 40 members voted in favor of his removal, citing alleged misconduct. Following his ousting, Deputy Speaker Mrs. Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa 1) was immediately sworn in as the new Speaker, and Mr. Fatai Adebola (APC-Ibeju Lekki 1) was elected as the Deputy Speaker.

Additionally, the Assembly suspended its Clerk, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, indefinitely and disbanded all principal positions and standing committees.
