Wike bans scavenging in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has announced a two-week suspension of used items markets, commonly known as “Panteka,” across the FCT.

The decision, shared by the minister’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, on X (formerly Twitter), also includes restrictions on scavenging activities within the Abuja city centre and surrounding areas.

Scavengers are now permitted to operate only at designated dump sites.

The ban, effective from Tuesday, January 14, 2025, was revealed during a meeting of the FCT Security Council.

A statement from the minister highlighted the seriousness of the measures: “Activities of all Pantekas have been banned for two weeks starting tomorrow.

“Scavenging within Abuja city centre is prohibited, and violators are confined to dump sites.

“Anyone caught vandalizing public infrastructure will face prosecution for economic sabotage and even attempted murder.”

The directive is part of ongoing efforts to address security concerns and curb the vandalism of public assets in the FCT.
