Shehu Sani explains possible reasons for State Speaker impeachment following Obasa’s removal

Must read

On Monday, January 13, lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly impeached Mudashiru Obasa from his position as Speaker.

His removal was swiftly followed by the appointment of Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker of the Assembly.

Reacting to the impeachment on X, former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, offered an analysis of factors that could lead to the removal of a Speaker in Nigeria.

Drawing from his experience since 1999, Sani explained that several political and leadership dynamics often play a role in such decisions.

According to him, one key reason is when there is suspicion that a Speaker is planning an impeachment move against others.

He also noted that a Speaker’s insistence on independence or refusal to follow a governor’s directives could create friction that might lead to impeachment.

Sani highlighted the possibility of lawmakers feeling neglected if the Speaker does not sufficiently cater to their needs, leaving them dissatisfied.

Additionally, delaying or obstructing the passage of bills important to the governor’s agenda, or being accused of collaborating with individuals deemed enemies of the governor, could also trigger such actions.
