Police officers on Monday were stationed at the People’s Democratic Party’s headquarters over the fear of a clash between the supporters of both Anyanwu and Okoye, two rivals claiming the position of the party’s national secretary.
This is as a tense atmosphere unfolded at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as Samuel Anyanwu and Ude Okoye, both claiming the position of National Secretary, were expected to resume work.
The dispute over the office stems from a Court of Appeal ruling that recognized Okoye as the legitimate National Secretary, a decision contested by Anyanwu, who has taken the matter to the Supreme Court.
Upon arriving at the secretariat amidst cheers from his supporters, Anyanwu proceeded to his office, where he called for prayers before addressing journalists.
He dismissed last week’s statement from the PDP’s national publicity secretary, which acknowledged Okoye as the rightful secretary, stating it reflected a personal opinion rather than the party’s stance.
The controversy dates back to Anyanwu’s decision to contest the Imo State governorship election, during which Okoye assumed the role of National Secretary.
Following Anyanwu’s electoral loss and return to the party, Okoye challenged his right to reclaim the position, arguing it had been legally vacated.
Despite the Court of Appeal ruling in Okoye’s favour, Anyanwu remains defiant, insisting on his legitimacy and appealing the judgment.
The PDP’s National Working Committee has reiterated its respect for the court’s decision, officially recognizing Okoye as the rightful National Secretary.
