Nigeria military enforce new code of conduct, ban homosexuality, cross-dressing

The Nigerian Armed Forces (NAF) has implemented updated regulations that strictly prohibit military personnel from engaging in activities considered unethical or contrary to the values of the service.

The revised Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service (HAFCTCS), signed into effect by President Bola Tinubu on December 16, 2024, outlines these prohibitions to enhance discipline within the ranks.

Activities such as homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, and cross-dressing are explicitly banned, along with behaviours deemed inappropriate, including body piercing, tattooing, public drunkenness, disorderly conduct, and other forms of misconduct.

According to the directive, officers are barred from participating in LGBTQIA2S+ activities or cross-dressing.

It further prohibits amorous relationships between officers and their subordinates or the spouses of subordinates, emphasizing the need to maintain professional boundaries.

The regulations also stress financial responsibility, mandating personnel to meet obligations such as vehicle licensing and insurance on time, with violations considered serious offences.

Issuing dud cheques is also classified as a punishable act.

Additionally, military personnel are forbidden from affiliating with secret societies or political parties.

The document states, “An officer shall not hold membership of any secret society or political party.

“He shall not participate, in any way, in activities concerned with such societies or parties, even in observatory capacities.”

These revisions aim to strengthen ethical standards and professionalism within the Nigerian Armed Forces.
