Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has officially handed over the staff of office and certificate of recognition to Abimbola Owoade, confirming him as the new Alaafin of Oyo.
The ceremony took place at the Oyo government house in Ibadan.
However, the appointment has sparked opposition from some members of the Oyomesi, the traditional council of kingmakers.
On January 10, they voiced their disapproval, stating that the selection process for the Alaafin should adhere to the 1967 Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration.
The Oyomesi criticized Governor Makinde’s reliance on consultation and divination in the process, claiming it deviated from established guidelines.
