The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has addressed reports of an alleged grid collapse on Saturday, January 11, 2025, refuting claims of a nationwide outage.
In a statement released on Saturday night, TCN clarified that the disruption was not a grid collapse but was caused by the tripping of two key transmission lines: the Osogbo-Ihovbor line and the Benin-Omotosho line. The issue, according to the company, primarily affected power supply to the Lagos axis.
“At about 13:41 Hrs, the Osogbo-Ihovbor line tripped, followed by the Benin-Omotosho line. This affected bulk supply to Lagos only,” the statement explained.
TCN further noted that the grid’s total power generation was 4,335.63MW just before the incident.
Following the tripping of the lines, generation dropped to 2,573.23MW, clearly indicating that the grid remained operational and did not collapse.
The disruption impacted power plants such as Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras.
However, the company confirmed that all plants, except the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line, have since been restored, with efforts ongoing to fully resolve the remaining issue.
TCN also urged the public to verify facts before spreading information, emphasizing the negative effects of misinformation.
“As we work tirelessly to build a more resilient transmission grid despite existing challenges, it is crucial to understand the value of true and verifiable information over deliberate misinformation,” the statement concluded.
