The Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended two Nigerians, Ayomide Akintunde and Nurudeen Adesiyan, for their alleged ties to a Moroccan terrorist currently held in Spanish custody.
The arrests occurred on December 19, 2024, in Modakeke, Ife East Local Government Area of Osun State.
On Friday, the Federal High Court in Abuja granted the DSS a 60-day detention order to conclude its investigation. Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order following an ex-parte application by the DSS, which argued that releasing the suspects could jeopardize the investigation and threaten public safety.
The DSS revealed that the suspects were in communication with a Moroccan terrorist under investigation by the Spanish National Police.
The terrorist is reportedly involved in jihadist propaganda and plans to acquire firearms for attacks in Nigeria.
“Preliminary investigations showed that the Moroccan terrorist communicated with Ayomide Akintunde and Nurudeen Adesiyan using their registered phone numbers, which they admitted to owning for over ten months,” the DSS stated in court documents.
The DSS disclosed that both suspects have been cooperative, providing valuable information that could lead to the identification and arrest of other individuals connected to the network.
The case has been adjourned until March 3, 2025, for further mention.
Reiterating its commitment to national security, the DSS called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities. The agency assured the public of its dedication to safeguarding the country from threats.
