President Bola Tinubu has conveyed his heartfelt condolences over the deaths of six soldiers during a recent terrorist assault on a military base in Sabon Gari, Damboa, Borno State.
The attack, which took place early Saturday morning, was orchestrated by members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The assailants arrived on motorcycles and in trucks, setting fire to the base and military vehicles, according to anonymous military sources.
Fighter jets launched from Maiduguri, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) away, quickly intervened, targeting the insurgents as they retreated.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed sympathy for the military and commended their resilience in responding to the assault.
He called for a comprehensive investigation to understand the circumstances of the incident and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“This decisive response by our armed forces highlights their capability and resolve to safeguard the nation.
“It underscores our dedication to eliminating terrorism and banditry, creating a more secure and peaceful Nigeria,” Tinubu stated.
The President extended his gratitude to the armed forces, recognizing their sacrifices and reassuring them of the nation’s unwavering support.
He specifically praised the air operations for their effective strikes that neutralized numerous insurgents and destroyed their equipment during the retreat.
Tinubu urged the military to adopt an offensive strategy by targeting terrorist hideouts, particularly in the Northwest, where criminal activities continue to threaten local communities.
He also encouraged citizens and the media to support the armed forces’ efforts to restore peace and security nationwide.
