Nigerian Catholic priest resigns to embrace African spirituality

Must read

Dr. Echezona Obiagbaosogu, a Catholic priest with 17 years of service, has resigned from the priesthood to fully embrace African traditional religion, citing a passion for preserving Africa’s spiritual heritage.

As reported by PUNCH, Obiagbaosogu, a lecturer on African Traditional Religion at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, revealed his decision was influenced by his fascination with traditional African spirituality, particularly the practice of rainmaking.

This announcement followed the successful defense of his PhD dissertation titled Rainmaking and Control in Igbo African Medicine.

Obiagbaosogu expressed his commitment to restoring Africa’s spiritual identity, which he believes has been eroded by colonialism.

“I have come to realize that my true calling is to serve my people through the ancient traditions of our ancestors,” he stated.

A Journey of Research and Transformation

Dr. Obiagbaosogu’s research was centered on rainmaking practices in Isieke, Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State. His spiritual journey, he said, was shaped by a childhood that blended Christianity and African traditions.

Raised by a Christian father who valued traditional medicine and a grandfather deeply rooted in African spirituality, he developed a profound curiosity about his cultural heritage. During his studies, he apprenticed under a renowned native doctor to deepen his understanding of these traditions and their significance.

While in seminary, he founded the Society for African Culture, which introduced him to a traditional rainmaker whose craft had a lasting impact on him.

“This journey is not about rejecting God but about connecting with the divine in a deeper, more authentic way,” Obiagbaosogu explained.

Bridging Tradition, Religion, and Science

Dr. Obiagbaosogu argues that African traditional practices possess immense scientific value, often misunderstood and disregarded.

“Civilization began with magic, evolved into religion, and now manifests as science. The white man codified magical laws and called them science, while African magic remains largely unexplored. It is African science, misrepresented by Nollywood and misunderstood by society.”

He emphasized the importance of documenting and modernizing these practices to preserve them for future generations.

Resignation and Personal Growth

Regarding his resignation from the Catholic Church, Obiagbaosogu described the decision as deeply personal, reflecting years of self-discovery.

“Life is a process, and sometimes you must look inward to make decisions that align with your understanding of reality,” he said.

Although he refrained from discussing specific details of his resignation, he framed it as a step toward embracing his convictions and heritage.

Dr. Obiagbaosogu’s decision has ignited discussions about the coexistence of African traditional beliefs and Christianity, as well as the relevance of indigenous practices in modern society.
