MNJTF announces elimination of 310 terrorists in Lake Chad region

The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has reported the killing of 310 terrorists and the dismantling of key logistical bases in the Lake Chad region as part of Operation Lake Sanity 2.

The force commander, Ibrahim Salau, made the announcement on Wednesday during the MNJTF Operation Lake Sanity 2 Medal Parade at the MNJTF Headquarters in Farcha, N’Djamena, Chad.

Salau detailed the operation, which took place from April 23 to July 22, 2024, resulting in the death of 310 terrorists, the destruction of critical logistical hubs, and the arrest of 160 individuals involved in supporting terrorist activities.

Additionally, over 800 terrorists and their families surrendered, indicating a decrease in terrorist support in the region.

The operation also facilitated the repatriation of more than 30,000 refugees and internally displaced persons, enabling them to return to their communities and resume their lives.

Salau acknowledged the vital contributions of the forces from Cameroon, Chad, Nigeria, and the Nigerien Republic, which united to form six powerful task forces combating terrorism in the region.

He also emphasized the collaboration between ground troops and air support from these nations.

In honoring fallen and injured soldiers, ceremonies have been held in Cameroon and Nigeria, with a similar event planned for Chad’s Sector 2.
These ceremonies pay tribute to the soldiers’ sacrifices during the operation, where several troops lost their lives and many others sustained injuries.

Chad’s defense minister, Issaka Malloua Djamous, praised the operation, calling it a significant moment in the fight against Boko Haram. He also stressed the need for continued vigilance and stronger regional cooperation to confront evolving terrorist tactics. Djamous also thanked the European Union and other partners for their support in providing training and equipment.
