Gov Bala sets eight-week deadline for university panel to resolve ASUU crisis

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has issued an eight-week ultimatum to the Visitation Panel of Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) to address the ongoing conflict with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and recommend solutions to persistent issues affecting the institution.

Speaking at the panel’s inauguration, Governor Mohammed emphasized the need to resolve the disruptions in teaching and learning at the university.

He tasked the panel with investigating the root causes of the strike, auditing the university’s financial operations, and proposing strategies for efficient and peaceful management.

“Our administration recognizes education as a cornerstone for meaningful development.

“This panel must come up with sustainable solutions to the lingering issues between ASUU, NASU, and the university management,” the governor said, noting that previous interventions had not fully resolved the crisis.

The panel’s chairperson, Prof. Gambo Laraba, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and assured the governor of a thorough report to guide reforms at the university.

The ASUU chapter at SAZU had earlier suspended an indefinite strike following Governor Mohammed’s direct engagement with the union in December 2024.

The strike stemmed from grievances such as the non-implementation of pension and death benefit schemes, unpaid allowances, and the controversial appointment of a polytechnic graduate as bursar, which union members argued violated the university’s regulations.

Governor Mohammed reiterated his commitment to finding lasting solutions to the challenges confronting the education sector in the state.
