A tragic incident has claimed the life of a Sokoto State Community Guard Corps member shortly after a successful operation that freed 66 kidnapped individuals.
The operation, conducted on Monday in Tidibali Forest, located in the eastern region of Sokoto State, was a joint effort spearheaded by the Nigerian Army.
Retired Colonel Ahmed Usman, Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Security, confirmed the death, describing it as the result of an accidental firearm discharge.
“The mishap occurred shortly after the team returned to their base.
“While handling his weapon, the gun discharged accidentally, causing fatal injuries,” Usman explained.
He further emphasized the strides made in the state-sponsored initiative to combat banditry, stating, “Thus far, 66 hostages have been rescued, and several bandits have been neutralized.
“The operation continues with the goal of eradicating criminal activities in Sokoto State.”
The freed victims have been relocated to Isa town in the Isa Local Government Area for further care.
