Police foil child trafficking operation on Abuja-Kano highway, rescue 59 children

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has uncovered a suspected child trafficking ring, rescuing 59 children between the ages of 4 and 12.

The operation, executed by the Patrol and Guard unit, took place around 3:30 p.m. along the Abuja-Kano expressway.

Officers, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sarki Umar, intercepted a white Peugeot 15-seater bus, bearing the registration number KMC 283 ZJ.

The vehicle was driven by Kano resident Idris Usman, accompanied by Alhassan Ibrahim, also from Kano.

Initial investigations revealed that children from multiple families were being transported under questionable circumstances.

FCT Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu, during a press briefing in Abuja, disclosed that the suspect, Usman, allegedly brought the children from Kano State, claiming he intended to provide them with training.

However, the absence of parental consent or proper documentation raised serious concerns about child trafficking and abuse.

Both suspects are currently in custody, along with the seized vehicle, while investigations are ongoing.

Commissioner Disu assured the public that the police are working closely with the FCT Social Development Secretariat (SDS) to ensure the safe return of the children to their families and to prosecute those involved.

Highlighting the provisions of the Child’s Rights Act 2003, Disu called on parents to prioritize their children’s safety.

In his defence, Usman, who claims to operate an Islamic school in Nasarawa, stated he was unaware his actions were illegal.

He admitted to having the children beg for food during their training, asserting that this was the first time he had transported such a large group.
