Kano governor’s special adviser dies 24 hours after appointment

Must read

Ahmad Bunkure, the recently appointed Special Adviser on Works to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has passed away.

The tragic news was confirmed in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi DawakinTofa, who revealed that Bunkure died on Wednesday while in Egypt.

Describing the loss as devastating, DawakinTofa highlighted Bunkure’s pivotal role in advancing the administration’s development agenda.

“This is a deeply sorrowful moment for our government. Bunkure was a committed professional whose expertise was instrumental to our vision.

“His passing leaves a significant void,” the statement read.

The announcement prompted an outpouring of condolences, notably from Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, and members of the Kano State Government.

Bunkure’s death came just a day after he was sworn into office as part of a recent reshuffle aimed at enhancing governance in the state.

Meanwhile, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), to which Governor Yusuf belongs, has been grappling with internal strife that has weakened its standing as a key opposition force.

Despite hopes of consolidating power after the Supreme Court upheld Yusuf’s election as governor, the party has been plagued by leadership disputes and factional divides.

Tensions escalated when loyalists of Senator Kwankwaso introduced a revised party logo—a red-white-red design featuring a book and graduation cap.

This move was rejected by the faction led by Boniface Aniebonam, who insisted on retaining the original logo, a basket of fruits symbolizing abundance.

Speaking to Daily Sun, Agbo Major, the Aniebonam-recognized National Chairman, dismissed the Kwankwasiyya loyalists’ claims.

“The NNPP has one logo—a basket of fruits on the Nigerian map—and one chairman, which is myself. The other faction is simply a Kwankwasiyya group, not a political party,” he stated.

The crisis deepened when the Aniebonam-led faction suspended Governor Yusuf for alleged anti-party activities.

His suspension was later extended by six months after he failed to respond to a summons, signalling prolonged discord within the party.
