Gunmen kidnap two catholic nuns in Anambra

Must read

Two Catholic nuns were kidnapped along Ufuma Road in the Orumba North area of Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria, on Tuesday evening.

Anambra State Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He reported that the nuns were returning from a vocational service meeting in Ogboji when they were abducted.

“A police-led joint operation is underway to rescue the two Catholic nuns,” Ikenga stated.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Nnaghe Obono, along with the deputy commissioner in charge of operations, visited the scene of the incident.

Obono revealed that the police had gathered some leads and were actively working to locate the abductors and secure the release of the victims.

Rising Cases of Abductions for Ransom

Anambra State has witnessed a surge in abductions for ransom, with civil servants, businesspeople, politicians, and students increasingly targeted.

The latest kidnapping comes two weeks after a member of the State House of Assembly, Justice Azuka, was abducted on Christmas Eve. Azuka, who represents Onitsha North Constituency I, remains in captivity.

Earlier in December, a retired Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, Professor Godwin Okpala, and his driver were also kidnapped.

They were released after nearly a month in captivity.

No group has taken responsibility for the kidnapping of the nuns.

However, a separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been accused of contributing to the growing insecurity in the region.

IPOB advocates for the secession of Nigeria’s southeast and parts of the south-south.
