Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to facilitate the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
After a meeting with Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, Abaribe highlighted the urgency of resolving issues in the Southeast, expressing confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and willingness to listen to stakeholders.
“I trust that the President will consider the advice of his Attorney General and other voices advocating for Kanu’s release,” Abaribe said.
“Criminals have exploited the situation by using Kanu’s name to commit violent acts. His release will be a step toward restoring peace and order in the region.”
The senator assured Tinubu that Southeast leaders are prepared to act as guarantors for Kanu, emphasizing that his release is essential for resolving the Monday sit-at-home protests and curbing insecurity in the region.
He stressed that stability in the Southeast is critical for Tinubu’s economic reforms, particularly tax initiatives, to succeed.
“Kanu’s freedom will help the Southeast regain its status as Nigeria’s production hub,” Abaribe added. “Without peace, progress in infrastructure and economic growth will remain stalled.”
Abaribe also lauded Governor Otti’s developmental efforts in Abia State, urging bipartisan collaboration to accelerate growth in the Southeast.
He called on Tinubu to prioritize critical infrastructure projects in the region, such as rail lines, and to ensure that tax reforms do not place undue burdens on future generations.
Reaffirming the Southeast Senators Forum’s commitment to regional development, Abaribe reiterated the group’s readiness to work with the President to achieve lasting peace and prosperity in the Southeast.
“We are committed to advocating for Nnamdi Kanu’s release and ensuring the Southeast achieves its full potential,” he concluded.
