Emmanuel Okoronkwo, an aide to the ousted National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, reportedly ordered security personnel to lock out journalists from the party’s secretariat in Abuja on Monday.
In addition to barring the press, Okoronkwo allegedly assaulted Ndubisi Orji, a correspondent for The Sun newspaper, who attempted to enter the secretariat to perform his journalistic duties.
According to reports, Okoronkwo had told Orji to leave, citing clear instructions from his superior not to allow any journalists inside.
As Orji prepared to depart, Okoronkwo followed him outside and physically attacked him with a series of slaps.
Samuel Ogidan, Chairman of the PDP Press Corps, condemned the assault in a statement, calling it a grave violation of press freedom.
He emphasized that the incident represented a direct attack on the rights of journalists and their ability to report without fear of intimidation or violence.
Ogidan stated, “This assault not only violates Mr. Orji’s fundamental human rights but also undermines the principles of free speech and media independence, which the PDP claims to uphold.” He further explained that Orji had been physically blocked from entering the secretariat by Okoronkwo, who continued the attack as Orji attempted to return to his vehicle. The correspondent’s mobile phone was damaged during the altercation.
Okoronkwo, in a fit of anger, reportedly threatened Orji, saying that nothing would come of the incident because he was acting on the orders of his principal, Senator Anyanwu.
According to Okoronkwo, Anyanwu had issued specific instructions to prevent journalists from entering the secretariat, even using physical force if necessary.
The revelation raised serious concerns about the PDP’s stance on press freedom. When contacted, Senator Anyanwu confirmed giving the order to restrict access to the secretariat, citing that the party was on break.
The PDP Press Corps expressed alarm at the assault, warning that it endangered the democratic right to free press and transparency.
They highlighted the role of the media in ensuring accountability and good governance, especially in light of the ongoing leadership crisis within the party.
Ogidan concluded by announcing that the incident had been reported to the Wuse Division of the Nigeria Police Force, and called for those responsible for the assault to be held accountable. The corps also urged the PDP to take a strong stand against such actions.
