Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has raised concerns over the migration of bandits from the Northwest to the state, attributing it to intensified military operations in the region.
Speaking at the 2025 annual inter-faith service for workers held in Agodi, Ibadan, Makinde disclosed that the fleeing bandits have begun settling in the state capital, Ibadan.
He assured residents that his administration would spare no effort in tackling the security threat.
Reflecting on the past year, Makinde described 2024 as particularly challenging for Oyo in terms of safety, citing incidents of fire outbreaks, kidnappings, and armed robberies.
However, he promised a more aggressive approach to improving security in 2025.
“During a security briefing, I was informed that some criminal elements from the Northwest are relocating to Oyo due to military pressure in their zones. Let me be clear—we will track them down and deal with them,” Makinde asserted.
He also revealed that bandits had camped less than two kilometres from his location during a recent retreat, emphasizing the urgency of the security challenges facing the state.
The governor called on traditional rulers and residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities.
“Our traditional rulers must stay proactive, and residents should understand that this is no joke. Report any suspicious movements immediately,” he urged.
Makinde assured the people of Oyo that his administration is committed to ensuring no part of the state becomes a haven for criminals.
“I won’t rest until every corner of Oyo is secure,” he vowed.
The security situation in Nigeria remains dire, particularly in the North, where bandits and terrorists continue to wreak havoc, leading to deaths, kidnappings, and widespread instability.
