Authorities in Owo, Ondo State, have apprehended 19 individuals suspected of involvement in a violent clash between rival cult groups that has claimed at least nine lives.
The death toll, initially reported as five, has risen, highlighting the devastating impact of the conflict.
Among the deceased are Fisayo Oladipupo, a senior member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and a mother and her child who were struck by stray bullets while attempting to flee.
The violence, which erupted in the early hours of Monday, has been attributed to a protracted feud between the opposing groups.
Oladipupo, a 56-year-old former youth leader and prominent figure in the APC’s Owo Local Government Area chapter, was reportedly shot at close range in what is suspected to be a retaliatory act tied to an unresolved dispute dating back over a decade.
Additional fatalities occurred in various parts of the town, including Eyinogbe, Ekusi, and Uselu.
Two suspected cult members were also killed during a shootout between the rival factions.
Ondo State Police Commissioner Wilfred Afolabi confirmed the arrests during a visit to the town to evaluate the situation.
He also acknowledged discrepancies in casualty reports, noting that only four deaths had been officially verified by the police.
“Normalcy has returned to Owo following the state government’s curfew, and the town is currently calm.
“However, those responsible for disrupting the peace will be apprehended and prosecuted,” Afolabi stated.
The commissioner and his team inspected affected areas, including Eyin Ogbe, Ijebu Owo, and the vicinity of the Palace, to enforce compliance with the curfew and ensure public safety.
The state government introduced the curfew as a preventive measure against further violence.
Law enforcement authorities have reassured residents of their commitment to maintaining order and have urged the public to cooperate with ongoing investigations to foster enduring peace in the community.
