An Ibadan High Court has refused the bail applications of Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Abdullahi Fasasi, the principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.
The decision follows widespread public outrage over the tragic stampede that occurred in December 2024 during a festive party organized by Naomi at the school, resulting in the deaths of at least 35 children.
Court sources revealed that the Attorney General appealed for more time to complete investigations, which influenced the court’s decision to deny bail to both Naomi and Fasasi.
A source quoted by Sahara Reporters stated, “The court did not grant the bail applications of Naomi and the school principal because the Attorney General requested additional time for the state to conduct further investigations.”
The case has been adjourned until next week for further hearings regarding Naomi, while the bail application for Oriyomi Hamzat, proprietor of Agidigbo FM, remains under review.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has emphasized the need for those responsible for the stampede to face justice.
However, he also clarified that he is not opposed to the suspects being granted bail, provided due process is followed.
The incident has continued to stir calls for accountability and justice across the state and beyond.
