The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged to ensure that individuals arrested for allegedly stealing sewage manhole covers along Abuja highways face strict legal consequences.

This, he emphasized, will serve as a deterrent to others.

The Minister also warned that buyers and users of stolen manhole covers and other vandalized public infrastructure would be apprehended and prosecuted for economic sabotage and endangering public safety.

In a statement issued by Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the Minister, it was revealed that security agencies had arrested over 50 suspects involved in manhole cover theft and recovered 25 stolen covers.

The arrests underscore the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s (FCTA) zero tolerance for criminal activities, particularly the destruction of public property.

Commending the swift response of security operatives, Wike described their efforts as exemplary and reassured FCT residents of the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

He also lauded citizens for their patriotism in condemning the vandalism, stressing the collective responsibility to protect public infrastructure.

The Minister urged FCT residents to continue using social media constructively, as demonstrated by highlighting the issue of stolen manhole covers.

He assured the public that the government would act swiftly when alerted to such concerns.

Wike concluded by calling on Nigerians to expose those engaging in the theft and purchase of public amenities.

“These criminals live among us and are known. It is essential for patriotic Nigerians to report them before they commit such acts,” he stated.
