Tragic fire in Delta claims lives, destroys properties

A devastating fire incident in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, claimed the lives of four individuals and destroyed multiple properties, including two banks when a petrol-laden tanker exploded.

According to a witness who spoke with AFRIPOST, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon along the Old Lagos/Asaba Road, near First Bank, as the tanker attempted to navigate a turn.

The 33,000-litre petrol tanker reportedly tipped over and burst into flames, engulfing nearby buildings and vehicles.

Other eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with no immediate intervention from firefighters, which allowed the blaze to spread uncontrollably.

“The tanker fell while trying to turn near the bank. It was horrifying. The fire consumed everything in its path before emergency services arrived,” a resident recounted.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, offering condolences to the bereaved families.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, the governor described the incident as a “horrifying loss” and assured the victims of government support.

Governor Oborevwori directed the Ministry of Health and the State Emergency Management Agency to provide urgent assistance to those affected.

He also commended the efforts of the Fire Service, residents, and security agencies for their actions in containing the inferno and aiding the victims.

While the fire claimed four lives, three others sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention.

Authorities have attributed the tanker’s fall to brake failure, sparking the deadly explosion.
