Simon Ekpa remains in prison as Finland freed two co-suspects

Two individuals detained alongside Simon Ekpa, a factional leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), have reportedly been released by Finnish authorities.

Ekpa, arrested on November 21, 2024, along with four others, is facing charges of incitement to violence, terrorism financing, and promoting extremist propaganda on social media.

Following his arrest, the Päijät-Häme district court ordered his detention over allegations of spreading terrorist propaganda.

While Ekpa and his associates have been in custody since November, sources revealed that two of the suspects have now been freed.

However, the identities of those released and the reasons behind their release have not been disclosed.

Authorities confirmed that Ekpa remains in detention, but Finnish officials have declined to provide further details.

This development comes as Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, announced that the Nigerian government has officially requested Ekpa’s extradition.

According to Gen. Musa, all necessary documentation has been submitted to the Finnish government to facilitate legal action.

“We are ensuring due process is followed. The Federal Government has sent the required documents to Finland, and we trust that appropriate steps will be taken,” Gen. Musa stated.

Investigations indicate that Finland is working closely with Nigeria to address the activities of IPOB, which has been linked to violence in southern Nigeria.
