Khamis Haruna, a 29-year-old resident of Albasu village in Jahun Local Government Area, has recounted his shock after surviving a poisoned meal allegedly prepared by his 15-year-old bride, Zahara’u Dauda, just two days after their wedding.
The tragic event, which occurred last Sunday, claimed the life of one of Haruna’s friends, Muhammed Alfah, while Haruna and another friend, Isyaku Adamu, narrowly survived after being hospitalized.
Contrary to earlier reports suggesting the incident happened on their wedding night, Haruna clarified that it occurred during the final phase of the wedding festivities.
According to him, the food—jollof spaghetti—was brought to him and his friends while they rested in his tailoring shop late Sunday night.
Initially hesitant to eat, Haruna joined his friends after they had started.
However, the group soon noticed a suspicious substance in the food and stopped eating.
Despite their caution, all three began experiencing severe stomach pain and were rushed to a hospital.
Sadly, Alfah succumbed to the poisoning, while Haruna and Adamu recovered after treatment.
Speaking to The Nation, Haruna revealed that he had been in a two-year relationship with Zahara’u before they wed.
He expressed disbelief, stating, “We married for love. She never showed any signs of resentment before this happened.”
However, Haruna alleged that Zahara’u conspired with her former boyfriend, Lawan Musa, who provided the poison she used in the meal.
The father of the deceased, Malam Muhammad Sani, described his son as a loyal and responsible individual who left behind a wife and six-day-old twin children.
“I’ve lost my only son and breadwinner,” he lamented, praying for divine forgiveness for his son.
Isyaku Adamu, the other survivor, recounted the moment they realized they had been poisoned, recalling how Alfah’s condition deteriorated rapidly.
He described Alfah as a close friend who had planned to celebrate the naming ceremony of his newborn twins the following day.
The police confirmed the incident, with Superintendent Lawal Shiisu Adam, spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, revealing that Zahara’u and Musa had been arrested. The case remains under investigation.
