The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, has dismissed a report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) alleging that Ayomide Adeleye, a murder suspect, is not in custody.
Ayomide Adeleye, a 200-level Philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), was arrested in September 2024 by Lagos State Police for the alleged murder of Christianah Idowu, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).
On November 5, Magistrate Seyi Omodara of the Ogba Magistrate Court ordered his remand at Ikoyi Prison while awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
FIJ recently published a report suggesting that Adeleye was never remanded for the murder, sparking controversy.
Responding to the claims on X, SP Hundeyin clarified that FIJ had confused Adeleye with another individual sharing the same name but charged with a separate crime.
According to Hundeyin, the other person was released in April 2024, months before Adeleye’s arrest.
Hundeyin stated, “Ayomide Adeleye was indeed charged with murder and is currently remanded. The individual released earlier was unrelated to this case.
Media outlets claiming investigative credibility should verify facts through official sources to avoid spreading misinformation.”
The police emphasized the importance of accurate reporting to maintain public trust and accountability.
