The Nigerian Army has defended the arrest and detention of a Point of Sale (POS) operator, Nansak Selbar, in Plateau State, accusing him of aiding kidnappers and handling ransom payments for terrorist groups.
In a statement issued by Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the Army dismissed online reports suggesting that Major General Nansak Shagaya could face a N100 million penalty for the alleged illegal detention of Selbar. The Army described the claims as false and misleading.
According to the statement, Selbar was arrested for playing a key role in kidnapping operations by receiving ransom payments for abductors. The investigation also revealed his alleged involvement in other security breaches, including procuring military uniforms for bandits and defrauding individuals by falsely claiming to assist with Army recruitment.
The Army stated that it acted in accordance with the law, relying on the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act (TPPA) 2022. A court order was obtained through a Motion Ex-Parte to detain Selbar for further investigation, with plans to transfer him to the appropriate authority for prosecution.
The Army clarified that Selbar’s detention was not influenced by Major General Shagaya, emphasizing that due legal processes were followed.
The statement also criticized an article by Alex Giwa, calling its allegations “spurious” and aimed at creating public distrust against the Army.
Warning against the dangers of misinformation, the Army urged media platforms and bloggers to avoid spreading false narratives, noting the potential consequences of panic and distrust between the public and security forces.
“We advise the media to act responsibly and verify information before publication to prevent unnecessary confusion,” the statement read.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging citizens to assist its efforts by providing reliable intelligence.
“The 3 Division Nigerian Army remains focused on securing communities and tackling criminal elements. We call on the public to work with us in building a safer society,” the statement concluded.
