The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a day-old baby who was found abandoned along a bush path near Crush Rock, behind the unfinished Red Bricks Market in Mpape, Abuja.
In a statement issued by SP Josephine Adeh, the Command’s spokesperson, officers from the Juvenile and Women Care Section (JWC) of the Mpape Division responded to a distress call on January 3, 2025, around 10:00 AM.
They discovered the infant wrapped in cloth and promptly took the baby to the Mpape Primary Health Care Center, where medical staff confirmed the child was in stable condition.
Community tips led to the arrest of the mother, Khadija Ali, who admitted to abandoning the baby due to her inability to provide care after her husband had left her.
The FCT Police Command condemned the abandonment, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
The rescued infant has been handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for proper care, while the mother faces charges under the Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003, Sections 14 and 16, pending the conclusion of investigations.
The Command expressed gratitude to the community for their assistance and urged residents to remain watchful and report any suspicious activities to authorities.
