NNPC invites Obasanjo to inspect rehabilitated Port Harcourt, Warri Refineries

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has extended an invitation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to visit and inspect its newly rehabilitated refineries, following his public doubts about the effectiveness of the $2 billion investment.

In a recent television interview, Obasanjo expressed skepticism about the success of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, recalling the difficulties his administration faced in trying to revitalize Nigeria’s refining capacity.

He remarked, “I was told recently that over two billion dollars have been spent on the refinery, and they still aren’t functioning. If anyone claims they’re operational, why is Aliko not involved? He will not only get his refinery working but also ensure its efficiency.”

Responding to the former president’s concerns, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, acknowledged Obasanjo’s invaluable contributions to Nigeria’s development but emphasized the significant transformation the company has undergone.

Soneye stated, “We have the utmost respect for President Olusegun Obasanjo as a statesman, and his observations are greatly valued. However, we must highlight that NNPC has undergone a substantial transformation.”

He further explained that NNPC has transitioned from being a loss-making entity to a profit-driven global energy leader.

The ongoing refinery rehabilitation, he noted, is a comprehensive overhaul aimed at achieving world-class standards, contrasting with the less effective Turnaround Maintenance efforts of the past.

Soneye credited the success to the leadership of the NNPC board under Group CEO Mele Kyari and the transformative energy policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He concluded by inviting Obasanjo to visit the refineries to witness the advancements firsthand, saying, “We warmly invite President Obasanjo to tour the rehabilitated refineries. His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his guidance. This visit will provide him with an opportunity to see the progress made under NNPC Limited’s leadership.”
