MNJTF troops prevent planned IED attack in Borno

Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), operating under Sector 3 in Monguno, Borno State, in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), successfully thwarted a potential improvised explosive device (IED) attack.

In a statement issued Friday, MNJTF spokesperson Olaniyi Osoba confirmed the operation, which took place on Thursday near the entrance to Gubio Local Government Area.

During the operation, a suspected terrorist courier, 28-year-old Murktar Alhaji-Chari, was apprehended while transporting materials believed to be used for assembling IEDs.

The seized items included four empty 12kg gas cylinders, one empty 6kg gas cylinder, two carburettor gas canisters, two pressure regulators, and a hose.

According to Osoba, the suspect admitted to transporting the materials to Damasak town in Mobbar Local Government Area for a planned attack targeting MNJTF forces.

“Intelligence indicates that the materials were intended for a terrorist group seeking to retaliate after suffering significant losses, including the elimination of members and the seizure of a large weapons cache,” Osoba stated.

The prompt interception of the suspect disrupted the planned attack and dealt a blow to the operational capabilities of the terrorist group.

The suspect is now in custody and is cooperating with investigators.

Ibrahim Ali, Force Commander of the MNJTF, commended the troops and the CJTF for their vigilance and professionalism, emphasizing the task force’s ongoing commitment to eradicating terrorism and safeguarding the region.
