Focus on development, security issues plaguing Benue – Ortom to gov Alia amid criticism

Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has called on his successor, Governor Hyacinth Alia, to prioritize developmental issues and refrain from engaging in political disputes.

The statement comes in response to comments from Governor Alia’s Chief Press Secretary, who criticized Ortom over his attendance at the 50th birthday celebration of Dr. Matthias Byuan, Executive Director of Housing, Finance, and Accounts at the Federal Housing Authority.

The event, held in Agidi, Konshisha Local Government Area, drew notable attendees, including Ortom and other prominent figures from the state.

In a statement issued by Terver Akase, Ortom’s spokesperson, the former governor described the remarks from Alia’s media aide as “unprovoked” and advised the current administration to avoid creating unnecessary political tension.

“Chief Ortom, like any other Benue citizen, is free to associate with others as guaranteed by the Constitution,” the statement read.

“His attendance at the Agidi event was in response to an invitation, and it is baffling why this has caused such agitation for Governor Alia’s team.”

Ortom also emphasized the need for the current administration to focus on pressing issues such as security and development.

He highlighted the state’s ongoing struggles with armed herders and bandit attacks, calling for immediate attention to safeguarding lives and property.

The statement further noted that the Alia administration has received federal allocations significantly higher than those of the previous government.

Ortom urged the governor to utilize these resources to address the state’s challenges, rather than becoming preoccupied with political rivalries.

“Governor Alia and his team should concentrate on governance and use the resources at their disposal to improve the state, instead of concerning themselves with who attends public events,” Ortom added.

Despite the critique, Ortom wished Alia success in leading Benue State and reiterated his commitment to supporting the progress of the state.

The exchange marks the latest in a series of political tensions between the two leaders since Alia assumed office.
