Rivers Elders lampoon Wike for disrespecting Peter Odili

The Concerned Elders of Rivers State have condemned Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, over his recent remarks about former Governor Peter Odili, describing his comments as disrespectful and immature.

Wike had claimed credit for revitalizing Odili’s political relevance, referring to him as a “General Overseer” and citing the appointments of Odili’s wife, Justice Mary Odili (retired), and daughter, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, by the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt and signed by prominent figures, including former Governor Sir Celestine Omehia and former Deputy Governor Tele Ikuru, the elders expressed disappointment in Wike’s conduct.

They described his remarks as inappropriate and contrary to the values of respect, unity, and decorum upheld in Rivers State.

The group criticized Wike for choosing a church event as the platform to attack Odili, a revered elder statesman, and his family, stressing that such actions undermine the respect traditionally accorded to elders in the community.

The elders also linked Wike’s outburst to Dr. Odili’s intervention in thwarting an alleged impeachment plot against Governor Fubara.

They suggested that Wike’s anger stems from Odili’s efforts to maintain stability in the state government.

“Wike is behaving like a proverbial child who ignores the wisdom of elders and burns his fingers,” the statement read.

The elders called for an end to public altercations that undermine the dignity of Rivers State and urged Wike to embrace humility and respect for those who have contributed significantly to the state’s growth.
