The Delta State Police Command has taken a 30-year-old man, Daniel Onyejekwe, into custody for allegedly fatally stabbing his neighbour, identified only as Christian, during a heated dispute over rice.
The tragic incident occurred on New Year’s Day in the Ogwanja area of Sapele, Delta State.
According to police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe, both men were involved in a violent altercation that left them severely injured.
Christian succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the fight erupted while rice was being distributed along Boyo Road in Ogwanja.
During the argument, Onyejekwe reportedly used a broken bottle to stab Christian multiple times.
A vigilante group attempted to save the victim by rushing him to the hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.
The police have launched an investigation, and Christian’s remains have been moved to a mortuary.
SP Edafe assured the public that the suspect would face prosecution following the conclusion of the investigation.
