HURIWA backs Gov Fubara amid lawmaker defections, budget controversy

Must read

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed its support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

This is despite opposition from 27 lawmakers who recently aligned with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.

In a statement, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, lauded Fubara for his steadfast commitment to constitutional principles and his focus on improving the lives of Rivers State residents.

Late in 2024, Governor Fubara introduced a budget of N1.188 trillion, dubbed the “Budget of Inclusive Growth and Development,” to the Rivers State House of Assembly, now reduced to three members led by Victor Oko-Jumbo.

Key allocations included over N195 billion for road projects, nearly N31 billion for agricultural initiatives, N63 billion for education, and N97.75 billion for healthcare development.

HURIWA commended Fubara’s refusal to engage with the lawmakers, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and allegedly sought to destabilize his administration.

The association criticized their actions as “political opportunism” and called out Wike’s faction for what it described as contradictory behavior, given Wike’s allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while supporting APC-linked agendas.

Onwubiko further expressed concerns over judicial rulings by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which initially sided with the defected lawmakers but were later overturned by the Court of Appeal, reinforcing the rule of law and constitutional supremacy.
