2024 nightmare for Nigerians – CUPP lashes Tinubu’s administration

Must read

The Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of worsening hardships for Nigerians in 2024 through ineffective policies and unmet promises.

CUPP National Secretary, Peter Ameh, described the President’s New Year’s Day address as “empty rhetoric” disconnected from the struggles of millions of citizens.

“2024 was a very harsh year for most Nigerians due to the impulsive decisions taken by this government,” he stated.

Ameh challenged Tinubu’s claims of fighting corruption, pointing to Nigeria’s poor ranking of 143rd out of 149 countries on the global corruption perception index as evidence of the administration’s failure.

He also highlighted the devastating effects of the subsidy removal policy, which led to a 300% increase in public transportation costs, deepening economic hardship for ordinary Nigerians. Ameh criticized Tinubu’s anecdote about a friend downgrading from a Rolls Royce to a Honda, calling it tone-deaf to the plight of citizens struggling to survive.

“With one pronouncement, the cost of living skyrocketed. Today, 129 million Nigerians—56% of the population—live below the poverty line,” Ameh noted.

The opposition leader dismissed the administration’s plan to establish a new company to address inflation, calling it an unnecessary duplication of existing agencies that would only increase inefficiency. He cited the rise in food inflation, now at 80%, as proof of the government’s inability to tackle pressing economic issues.

Ameh further criticized Tinubu’s debt management, pointing out that debt servicing costs had soared from N87 trillion to over N130 trillion within a year.

The CUPP called on the administration to shift focus from grandstanding to implementing practical solutions that address the growing economic and social crises facing Nigerians.

“These policies are pushing more Nigerians into excruciating poverty,” Ameh warned, urging immediate action to alleviate the nation’s worsening challenges.
