Presidency responds to Governor Bala Mohammed on tax reform criticism

Must read

The Presidency has refuted claims by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is unresponsive to the concerns of Nigeria’s federating units.

Governor Mohammed recently criticized the tax reform bills introduced by the Tinubu administration, alleging that the measures were biased and detrimental to certain regions.

He warned that such reforms could lead to unrest if passed, describing them as “calls for anarchy.”

In a swift response, the Presidency urged Governor Mohammed to reconsider his remarks, highlighting the potential of such statements to undermine national unity.

On Tuesday, Governor Mohammed clarified his position, stating that his comments were not meant as an attack on the president. He, however, emphasized the need for greater consultation with governors and other stakeholders before implementing the reforms.

“As the head of the federation, President Tinubu must listen to us as federating units. He should avoid an attitude of impunity that suggests the reforms will proceed regardless of our concerns,” the Bauchi governor remarked.

Reacting to the controversy, Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, described Governor Mohammed’s statements as inflammatory and unconstructive.

He affirmed that President Tinubu is a “listening leader” who prioritizes dialogue and collaboration. Bwala criticized the approach of resorting to public blackmail instead of engaging constructively with lawmakers to address concerns.

Governor Mohammed and 18 other Northern governors have collectively rejected the tax reform bills. Similarly, the National Economic Council, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, has expressed reservations about the proposals, which have sparked intense debate nationwide.

Despite the opposition, President Tinubu maintains that the reforms are essential for Nigeria’s economic development and sustainability.

The administration has reiterated its commitment to addressing stakeholders’ concerns while moving forward with policies to stabilize the economy.
