Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has clarified his recent comments about President Bola Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing that his statements were constructive criticism rather than a threat.
The response comes after the presidency issued a statement urging the governor to retract his remarks, which were allegedly interpreted as a threat over the proposed Tax Reform Bills.
The presidency had described Mohammed’s earlier assertion, “We will show President Tinubu our true colour,” as divisive and unbecoming of a statesman.
In his clarification, Governor Mohammed stated that his comments were intended to draw attention to the potential harm the proposed tax reforms could inflict on Northern Nigeria, stressing the need for equitable policies.
Speaking during a Christmas event in Bauchi, the governor remarked, “Ignoring the cries of the people is a recipe for anarchy. These reforms are detrimental to Northern Nigeria. How can we pay salaries and develop infrastructure if our revenue sources are taken away? This is unacceptable.”
A statement signed by Mukhtar Gidado, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, titled, “Re: Presidency’s Misleading Statement on Governor Bala Mohammed’s Remarks on Tax Reforms,” further elaborated on his position.
“It is misleading and mischievous to interpret Governor Bala Mohammed’s sincere caution about the dangers of unfavorable policies as a threat to the presidency,” the statement read.
Governor Mohammed reaffirmed his respect for the presidency, emphasizing his commitment to constructive dialogue and advocating for policies that protect the interests of all Nigerians, especially those in disadvantaged regions.
The statement also noted that his concerns echoed those of some All Progressives Congress (APC) governors who have similarly raised objections to the tax reforms.
The governor urged the presidency to embrace constructive criticism rather than dismiss dissenting voices. “We call on the Federal Government to prioritize dialogue and inclusivity over divisive rhetoric and selective criticism,” the statement added.
Governor Mohammed concluded by reiterating his willingness to work collaboratively with the presidency to tackle national challenges and promote Nigeria’s growth and development.
