Arewa forum demands compensation for Sokoto air strike victims

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has urged the government to compensate victims of a reported military air strike on Silame Community, Sokoto State, which allegedly claimed ten lives on Wednesday, December 25, 2024.

In a statement released on Monday, December 30, the ACF National Publicity Secretary, Tukur Muhammad-Baba, condemned the incident, describing it as “one mistake too many.” The military, however, denied responsibility, stating that the deaths resulted from a secondary explosion, not a direct strike by its forces.

Muhammad-Baba expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, emphasizing that it was not an isolated case. He referenced a similar attack on the Tudun Biri community in Kaduna State about a year ago, which the military initially dismissed as a planned operation but later admitted was a mistake after internal investigations.

“The bland response of a military spokesperson insisting the attack targeted a planned objective was deeply insensitive,” he said. “It remains unclear if those responsible for the Tudun Biri incident faced any repercussions.”

The ACF also called for thorough investigations into the Silame incident and demanded adequate compensation for all affected victims. The forum stressed the need for accountability and justice to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies.
