President Bola Tinubu has expressed his satisfaction with the re-opening of the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the re-commissioning of the refinery as another significant achievement in 2024, which has strengthened Nigerians’ faith in his administration.
The restart of Warri Refinery follows the earlier resumption of the Port Harcourt Refinery in November, which is now operating at 60,000 barrels per day.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to boosting local refining capacity and positioning Nigeria as a key hub for downstream industrial activities in Africa.
He noted that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government of former President Muhammadu Buhari had initiated the comprehensive rehabilitation of all four state-owned refineries, laying the foundation for these recent advancements.
With the 125,000-barrel-per-day Warri Refinery now operating at 60% capacity, President Tinubu emphasized that the administration’s broader plan to ensure energy efficiency and security is progressing well. He commended the leadership of Mele Kyari and his team at NNPCL for their efforts in restoring Nigeria’s standing as a major global oil producer.
“The restart of the Warri Refinery is a source of immense joy and optimism for me and Nigerians. This milestone brings renewed hope for a brighter future, reinforcing the promises we made. It is an excellent way to conclude the year after the success achieved with the Port Harcourt Refinery,” President Tinubu stated.
He also praised NNPCL for following through on his directive to restore all four refineries, and urged the company to expedite repairs on the Kaduna Refinery and the second Port Harcourt Refinery, which has a capacity of 150,000 barrels per day. This will further solidify Nigeria’s position as a key global energy provider.
“WRPC will focus on producing and storing essential products, including Straight Run Kerosene, Automotive Gas Oil, and heavy and light Naphtha,” he added.
