A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna on Monday sentenced Felicia Gabriel, a sales representative, to 15 months in prison for embezzling N1.2 million belonging to her employer.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel handed down the sentence after Gabriel pleaded guilty to the theft and requested leniency.
Emmanuel, however, offered her the option to pay a fine of N30,000 and ordered her to repay the stolen sum of N1.2 million to her employer, Jessica Aaron.
The magistrate warned that failure to restitute the amount would result in an additional one-year prison term.
Earlier, Prosecutor Inspector Chidi Leo informed the court that the incident was reported on December 20 at Sabon Tasha Police Station by the complainant.
Gabriel, who worked as Aaron’s sales representative, had been entrusted with N1.2 million to deposit into a bank account but instead misappropriated the funds for personal use.
The prosecutor noted that Gabriel’s actions violated the provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code of 2017.
