Kaduna-based activist and political analyst Mahdi Shehu has been taken into custody by the Department of State Services (DSS) over accusations of circulating a misleading video with potential implications for national security.
The arrest occurred over the weekend following the videoโs widespread circulation on social media.
Reports suggest that the content of the video falsely claimed the Nigerian government planned to establish a French military base in the North-West, using outdated footage to back the assertion.
Although the news could not be independently confirmed, sources indicated that Shehu is being held in Kaduna and is likely to face legal proceedings soon.
Despite deleting the video, its viral spread reportedly raised alarm among authorities.
Officials have reportedly initiated steps to arraign Shehu while emphasizing that his rights will be respected during the legal process.
This incident adds to Shehuโs legal troubles, as he previously faced accusations of attempted extortion.
Former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami had linked Shehuโs earlier arrest to alleged criminal activities, though Shehuโs lawyer claimed the charges were politically motivated, citing his criticism of former President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration.
Malamiโs legal team refuted these claims, insisting that Shehuโs previous apprehension was based on evidence of extortion and related offenses.
