Former Rivers State Governor, Peter Odili, has lauded the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for thwarting attempts by an individual to dominate the state and turn it into a personal asset.
Speaking during a Christmas Ballad he hosted at his Port Harcourt residence, Odili praised Fubara’s resilience and leadership, describing him as a liberator of the people.
He noted that his family organized the event, featuring music and other performances, to honor Fubara and his family for their exemplary governance and strength in navigating political challenges.
Odili highlighted the events of October 25, 2023, when Fubara faced intense political opposition.
According to Odili, the governor not only overcame the crisis but also restored stability in governance and rekindled the hope of civil servants and citizens, reminiscent of Rivers State’s glory days.
A statement issued by Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara’s Chief Press Secretary, quoted Odili as saying, “Governor Fubara confronted an unnecessary but fierce battle for the soul of Rivers State, prevented its capture, and emancipated its people.”
Although Odili refrained from naming individuals, his remarks appeared to target the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who previously served as Rivers governor.
Wike, instrumental in Fubara’s rise to power, later expressed regret over supporting him and pledged to challenge Fubara in 2027.
Justice Mary Odili, during the event, presented gifts to Fubara, his wife Valerie, and their children.
She attributed Fubara’s emergence as governor to divine intervention, emphasizing his role as a liberator for the state.
In his response, Governor Fubara reflected on the political strife, acknowledging the support of Rivers citizens as his source of strength.
He emphasized his reliance on divine guidance, stating, “The ultimate liberator and fighter remains God Almighty. With Him on our side, victory is assured.”
