A fatal accident along the Owo-Ikare highway in Ondo State has claimed the lives of 13 people, leaving one survivor with severe injuries. The crash occurred on Saturday morning near Abule Panu, before Ose Bridge.
Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that 14 people were involved.
The statement reads:
“The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ondo State Sector Command regrets to announce a tragic road accident that occurred on December 28, 2024, at approximately 10:14 a.m.
“Two buses were involved in the crash, resulting in the deaths of 13 passengers, who were burned beyond recognition. Only one person survived and is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Owo.”
Eyewitnesses reported that the crash was caused by a tire burst on a bus traveling from the Ikare axis. The driver lost control, leading to a head-on collision with another bus carrying fabric from the Owo axis. Both buses immediately caught fire after the collision.
Emergency responders, including the FRSC, police, and fire service, arrived at the scene to assist. The remains of the victims have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre morgue in Owo.
The FRSC has called on drivers to prioritize vehicle maintenance and adopt safer driving practices. Passengers are also encouraged to speak up against reckless driving to prevent such tragedies.
