Prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana SAN has criticized the Nigerian police for their failure to prevent recent stampedes across the country, holding them accountable for the tragic incidents.
Falana stressed that the government must compensate the victims’ families, attributing the rising crime rate to poverty and unemployment.
Speaking at the inaugural Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series in Akure, Ondo State, in honour of the late former governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Falana discussed the role of security sector reforms in fostering peace and stability.
He praised Akeredolu for his leadership and bold initiatives, including the establishment of the Amotekun Corps, which he credited with enhancing Ondo State’s security.
“Akeredolu was a fearless leader who prioritized justice and development. His courage in creating Amotekun, despite federal resistance, paved the way for state policing in Nigeria,” Falana stated.
He also highlighted that Ondo’s security achievements have set a benchmark for other states.
Addressing the recent stampedes in Ibadan, Abuja, and Okija, which claimed 115 lives, Falana condemned the police for failing in their duty to protect citizens.
He called on the government to compensate the affected families, describing the deaths as avoidable tragedies.
The current Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, pledged to uphold Akeredolu’s legacy of good governance and development.
He detailed ongoing efforts to complete infrastructure projects, implement a new minimum wage, and improve education and healthcare.
Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining the Amotekun Corps as a vital component of the state’s security framework.
Chief Sehinde Arogbofa, Afenifere leader and chairman of the event, also lauded Akeredolu’s impactful leadership and urged continued efforts to deepen his vision for Ondo State.
