The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has granted approval for the renewal of the spectrum lease agreement between MTN Nigeria Communications Plc and Natcom Development and Investment Limited (NTEL).
In a notification to the Nigerian Exchange Limited, MTN’s company secretary, Uto Ukpanah, disclosed that the agreement covers NTEL’s 5MHz frequency division duplex (FDD) in the 900MHz spectrum band and 10MHz FDD in the 1800MHz spectrum band across 19 states in Nigeria.
The renewal, set for a two-year period, will commence on May 1, 2025. Additionally, the NCC approved a one-year expansion of the spectrum lease to include the remaining 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), effective January 1, 2025.
“MTN Nigeria Communications Plc hereby notifies the Nigerian Exchange Limited and the investing public that the NCC has approved the renewal of the spectrum lease agreement with NTEL. This renewal spans 19 states and now includes a one-year expansion to cover all states and the FCT, effective January 1, 2025,” the statement read.
MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, expressed satisfaction with the development, noting its significance for the company’s service delivery.
“We are pleased with the renewal of the spectrum lease agreement with NTEL, which now includes coverage for all states and the FCT. This lease enhances our ability to improve 3G and 4G coverage and capacity, allowing us to meet the growing demand for data and deliver an improved user experience for our customers,” Toriola said.
The renewal is expected to bolster MTN Nigeria’s network capabilities, enabling the company to leverage the expanded spectrum for enhanced connectivity and improved service delivery across the country.
