11 Killed in Christmas Day attack on Benue communities

At least 11 people were killed in fresh attacks on communities in Nyiev-ya, Kwande Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, during Christmas celebrations on December 25, 2024.

Local sources reported that armed herders invaded Ubutu and GSS Anwase, setting houses ablaze and killing residents, including a victim identified as the son of Daniel Jam.

Another attack occurred simultaneously in the Tse Azege and Ityuluv areas of Nyiev-ya.

Residents, speaking anonymously for safety reasons, called for urgent government intervention.

“The situation in Kwande remains dire. The attackers continue their onslaught,” one local said.

The President General of Mzough U Tiv (MUT) Worldwide, CP Iorbee Ihagh (retired), confirmed the unprovoked attacks after contacting local leaders.

He reported that 11 people were killed, with several others missing. Community leaders have since reported the incidents to the police.

Another resident, Solomon Amande, alleged that the attacks were carried out by a group of armed herders and militia.

Meanwhile, Benue State Police Public Relations Officer SP Catherine Anene stated she had yet to receive a briefing on the incident at the time of this report.
